Ikigai Definition: The reason you wake up in the morning.

I fear this message hasn’t spread fast enough, or it’s one of those thoughts that passes by before we’re pulled back into everyday life.

Quite simply, the Japanese concept of Ikigai is linked to longevity, and is commonly observed in regions known as Blue Zones.

So what the hell are Blue Zones?

Essentially, a Blue Zone is a region of the world where people live significantly longer than average... with unusually high numbers reaching 100 years of age. These places share very similar lifestyle patterns, reminding us that a magic pill won’t make you live forever… but daily habits just might.

The five recognised Blue Zones are:

  1. Okinawa, Japan

  2. Sardinia, Italy

  3. Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

  4. Ikaria, Greece

  5. Loma Linda, California

So what do these locals do differently?

  • They live with a a clear sense of purpose (Ikigai),

  • Endure natural daily movement,

  • They eat mostly whole foods and stop when they’re 80% full (yes I’m looking at you),

  • They maintain strong social human connections,

  • Their stress levels remain comparatively low.

Living in fast-paced cities, we may tick some of these boxes above, but where we fall short is practicing Ikigai: our reason for being.

So how do we implement Ikigai in our daily life?

Let’s start small, forget the pressure of “What is my life purpose? Why am I here?” Let’s gravitate towards What makes me lose track of time? What do people naturally thank me for?

Choose one small meaningful action daily, purpose grows through repetition - nothing dramatic.

Build a purposeful routine, and attach meaning to what you already do. For example, cooking becomes nourishment. Work becomes contribution. Movement becomes care for your future self.

A Five Minute Exercise

Write down four quick lists…

  • What am I good at?

  • What do I enjoy?

  • What do people need?

  • What could I be rewarded for?

Where they overlap, meaning begins..

Now let’s translate Ikigai and Blue Zone habits into our modern lives..

Eat whole foods. Olive oil (duh), yoghurt, nuts & fresh herbs. Reduce processed foods effectively immediately. Finish meals when you’re satisfied, not simply because they’re there.

Move naturally. Walk for errands. Take the stairs. Carry groceries instead of doing delivery. Stretch while doing mundane tasks like cooking or cleaning…

Connect daily. One meaningful conversation. Share meals. Call family. Stay woven into community.

Grow continuously. Run, journal, reflect, learn.

Turn your stress lever right down. Walk after meals. Drink your coffee without scrolling. Cook slowly. Decompress without noise.
