The Berry Edit: Eat, Shop, Stay
When you think of a long weekend escape, I’m sure you’ve heard the old town of Berry get passed around.
Or let me guess, you’ve heard of the Berry Donut Van? See.. I hate to burst your bubble with this one, but there is nothing idyllic about lining up for two hours for a Cinammon donut that’s only perfect upon first bite, fresh out of the oven. Then after that, the romantics around it fades, as does lining up for that same donut again. My recommendation would be if you MUST try it.. then avoid peak season times (November-February or Winter weekends) opt for a random Wednesday first thing in March, or avoid it altogether.
So you know about the Berry Donut Van but you don’t know that the town was founded in 1822, and was originally a timber and dairy farming hub, honorarily named after the Berry Family in 1889. Today it’s well known for it’s historic charm housing cafes, boutiques, restaurants, luxury escapes and you can’t forget the acreage.
Some recommendations for you:
WHERE: COFFEE FIX
Upon arrival, you’re heading to one of two (or both)
Milkwood Bakery - you must stock up on some pastries while you’re here for later or if you’re feeling peckish, try their renowned meat pies or sausage rolls. I also opt in for their Spinach & Feta..
IV Coffee Drip - Say less. A vibe to match the aesthetics of their coffee. Excellent coffee I might add.
WHERE: TO SHOP
Berry is known for its line-up of boutiques along the main street and curated retail stores, which you can bop in and out of. Some recommendations but I know you’ll fall into them anyway:
The Berry Tea Shop (For mum, or for you)
Haven & Space - They stock quality, affordable pieces & Seed & Sprout!
Few & Far Homewares - The “I didn’t need this, but I’m buying it anyway” store
SAINTE - Previously Amara Home, all things lavish & designer
Berry Village Market - Only if you happen to be passing by during the Fourth Sunday of the month..
WHERE: TO EAT
The Berry General Store - If I know you, you’d definitely want to order the snack plate. Dippy eggs, sourdough, citrus, jam, avocado, whipped butter, vintage cheddar, double smoked ham..
WHERE: TO STAY
Linnaeus Collection - Luxury accommodation designed for everyone but the singles.
If we’re really splurging on life’s simple pleasures we’re gathering our nearest and dearest and staying at Moraea Farm Retreat or Linnaeus Farm (a part of the Linnaeus Collection offering).
Re-imagined farmhouses, with design led touches. Think high ceilings, polished timer floors, exposed brick, beautifully reused materials. With five generous king suites, the space is designed for slow living. Still not convinced? The heated pool, sauna, hot tub and fire pit might win you over.
The complete off grid package that also includes collecting eggs from the chicken coop, wandering the gardens, meeting the Highland cows and goats or booking in the ultimate farm tour.
